Kalpesh Hajare, another idol-maker, waves his paint-stained hands and says the business has become a costly affair. “With the sales dull, we are forced to borrow money to manage day-to-day affairs and the debts are only mounting. Now, the prices of raw materials like gypsum powder, watercolor, and spray guns are sold at triple the rates when compared to 2019. How are we to sustain,” he laments.

“Most members of the 10 families in the area, who work for about months here and go back to their native places in Rajasthan for the rest of the year, depend on the sales during Ganesh Chaturthi,” says S. Teja, an idol-maker of 25 years as she paints a one-foot idol with varnish.

Ganesh idols are sold in the country every year during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, generating an estimated business of more than on the back of the campaign to ban imported Ganesh idols from China. “Earlier, large quantities of Ganesh idols made of plaster of Paris, stones, marbles, etc., were imported from pen due to affordable prices but due to CAIT’s campaign over last two years, the import stands nil,” said BC Bhartia, National President and Praveen Khandelwal, Secretary General, CAIT in a statement.
